Situated adjacent to Route 52, near the historic town of Bramwell in Mercer County, Pinnacle Rock State Park stands as a captivating gem within the West Virginia State Park system. Dominating the skyline with its towering presence, Pinnacle Rock is a remarkable sandstone formation soaring to an impressive height of 3,100 feet above sea level, offering visitors a unique and picturesque backdrop against the rugged mountains of southeastern West Virginia.
Established in 1938, the park originated from the Conservation Commission’s acquisition of a 26-acre parcel encompassing the rock. Development soon followed with the construction of parking areas, walkways, and a spacious picnic shelter featuring a charming stone fireplace, all courtesy of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in collaboration with the state of West Virginia. Today, the park has expanded to nearly 400 acres, including the scenic Jimmy Lewis Lake, seasonally stocked with trout, enhancing the recreational offerings within the park’s boundaries.

New for 2025! The Brush Creek Holl’r Mountain Coaster is located just 40 minutes away in Princeton, WV. The coaster travels up a 700-foot incline, then races down 2,500 feet of track up to 30 mph! The coaster is an exciting new attraction for our area.
The Museum’s Pioneer Park, established between 1975 and 1978, sits on land once owned by A. Jefferson Higginbotham, Jr. The park is situated on the nationally registered Crab Orchard Archaeological Site, believed to have been a late Woodland period Cherokee community later acquired by the Witten family, Tazewell County’s earliest settlers. In 1978, a nonprofit corporation was chartered to receive donations of objects and funds. This led to the construction of the Higginbotham Museum Center from 1979 to 1981, funded by state grants to the county. This Museum Center spans approximately 7,200 square feet, showcasing our permanent collection alongside rotating special exhibitions.
Pioneer Park features 15 historic log and stone structures and the Red Barn, which is used for exhibitions and community events. In the 2000s, the museum acquired the 1907 Pisgah Store and the adjacent Frog Level service station. Since 1983, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation has overseen the museum’s operations through an elected Board of Directors.
