At Real McCoy Cabins, we built the kind of mountain getaway off-road riders actually want to come back to after a full day on the trails. Our family owned retreat in Pocahontas, Virginia combines rustic luxury cabins, RV accommodations, rider-friendly amenities, and convenient access to both the Spearhead Trails and Hatfield McCoy Trail systems. What began with six custom built cabins has grown into a complete adventure base with full-hookup RV slips, private bathhouses, an onsite Country Store, ATV wash facilities, and our five bedroom Homestead Cabin. Whether you ride, camp, explore, or simply love the mountains, we are here to make your stay memorable.
Real McCoy Cabins
Real McCoy Cabins started because there was a clear need in this part of the mountains. Riders were coming to Southwest Virginia and neighboring West Virginia for incredible off-road trails, but finding lodging designed around the realities of an ATV, UTV, or dirt bike trip was not always easy. Traditional lodging might give you a bed, but that does not necessarily mean there is enough trailer parking, a place to wash your machine, easy trail access, or room for an entire riding group to stay together.
We wanted to create something more useful while still making it feel like a real mountain getaway. Our original six cabins were built to combine rustic character with the comforts guests want after spending hours on the trail. Over time, we listened to what our guests needed and kept building around the experience, adding RV sites, camping amenities, bathhouses, more space for groups, and conveniences that make a multi-day riding trip easier from arrival through checkout.

To a Full Mountain View Retreat
As Real McCoy Cabins has grown, we have been careful not to lose the personality that made the property special in the first place. Our cabins feature custom interior woodwork created by local artisans, giving the accommodations a warm Appalachian character that feels connected to the surrounding mountains rather than copied from a generic vacation rental.

We offer 55-foot RV slips with full water, sewer, and electrical hookups, clean, modern bathhouses for RV and camping guests, and an onsite laundromat that comes in especially handy when the trails have been generous with the mud. We also offer an ADA accessible cabin option, large turnaround and trailer parking areas, and an onsite ATV wash station so your machine does not have to wear yesterday’s trail for the rest of the trip.
For larger families and riding groups, our Homestead House opened a whole new way to experience the property. The five bedroom house sleeps up to 18 guests, giving bigger groups the space to stay together while still enjoying the same access to the trails and amenities that brought them here in the first place.
The Hatfield McCoy Trail system is within easy reach too. Guests can take an approximately three mile, ATV friendly road ride toward Bramwell, West Virginia, and connect with a much larger network of riding that links the Pocahontas, Pinnacle Creek, Indian Ridge, and Warrior trail systems. The Hatfield McCoy and Spearhead networks are now connected, although riders should remember that the two systems maintain separate permit requirements.

That location puts our guests in an unusual position: you can stay in Virginia and experience major trail systems on both sides of the state line without loading your machines onto a trailer every morning. After a full day of climbing, mud, overlooks, and switchbacks, you can ride back to your cabin, wash down the machine, clean up, and settle in for the evening.
Amenities Designed by People Who Understand Riding Trips
A successful off-road vacation involves more than finding somewhere to sleep. You need room for the truck and trailer, a way to clean up after the trail, somewhere to wash gear, reliable hot water, supplies you forgot to pack, and a comfortable place to relax once the helmets come off.
We have built our property around those realities. Our accommodations feature modern comforts alongside their rustic design, including on-demand tankless water heating that makes a long hot shower especially satisfying after hours outside. Our onsite laundry facilities help guests deal with muddy riding clothes, while the ATV wash station lets you clean up your machine before the next adventure.
Our Country Store adds another layer of convenience because nobody wants to make a long supply run after finally getting settled. Guests can pick up useful items without turning a forgotten necessity into a major detour, and firewood is also available for purchase when an evening around the fire is part of the plan.
Big Groups Are Welcome Here
Off-road trips have a habit of growing. Someone invites a brother, who brings a friend, who brings another couple, and suddenly that quiet weekend ride has become a convoy. We built our expanded accommodations with exactly those kinds of groups in mind.
The Homestead House can sleep up to 18 guests, making it especially useful for larger riding crews, extended families, and groups that want to spend the trip together rather than being scattered across unrelated rentals. Our other cabins and RV accommodations provide additional flexibility when the group needs a combination of sleeping arrangements or wants more individual privacy.
Large turnaround areas also make arriving with trucks and trailers less stressful. We know maneuvering a long trailer through a tight vacation-rental driveway is nobody’s idea of the perfect first activity after hours on the road, so the practical side of group travel has been part of how we have developed the property.

The historic attraction tells the story of the Pocahontas Coal Fields and gives visitors a closer look at the coal industry that shaped the region, making it an easy addition to a stay when you want to understand more about the community beyond the trails.

The Brush Creek Holl’R Mountain Coaster in Princeton is promoted by our property as about a 40-minute trip, making it a fun choice for groups looking for a different kind of adrenaline after trail riding.
Pipestem Resort State Park, Historic Crab Orchard Museum, Burke’s Garden, and the beginning of the Back of the Dragon and Head of the Dragon scenic routes make excellent longer outings through the surrounding Appalachian region. Depending on the attraction and route, guests should generally plan on approximately 25 to 50 miles of mountain driving from the property, with plenty of scenery along the way.
Our attractions guide also features Cascades National Recreation Area (and its 66-foot waterfall to swim in), Winterplace skiing and snowboarding, New River Gorge National Park (complete with white water rafting and kayaking), Brush Creek Falls (a swim-in waterfall), and Hungry Mother State Park for guests planning broader day trips. These destinations range from roughly an hour to a couple of hours away (depending on road conditions) so they are especially well suited to longer stays when you want to see more of Southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia.
