Laurel Creek ATV Trails in Tazewell, VA: The New Ride You’ve Been Waiting For (and Why Real McCoy Cabins Makes the Perfect Basecamp)

Southwest Virginia has quietly become one of the best “bring-the-trailer-and-don’t-look-back” ATV destinations on the East Coast, and it just got even better. Spearhead Trails recently announced the opening of its newest system—Laurel Creek — in Tazewell County, Virginia, welcoming ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes (with the usual permits/rules).

If you’re planning a trip (or you’re looking for an excuse to plan one), here’s what makes Laurel Creek worth the hype—and why staying at Real McCoy Cabins in Pocahontas, VA is the cheat code for a smoother, more comfortable riding getaway.

What’s new: Laurel Creek is Spearhead’s freshest trail system in Tazewell County

Spearhead Trails is known for big mileage and variety—multiple trail systems spread across Southwest Virginia. Their ATV trails page notes 400+ miles across 7 trail systems**, with maps and navigation resources available.

Laurel Creek is the newest addition, and it’s designed to be approachable and fun—especially if you’re bringing a mixed-skill group. On Spearhead’s official trail listing, Laurel Creek is shown at about 9.14 miles currently open, with more to come, plus a mix of trail ratings and even some ATV-approved hardtop road mileage.

A few practical details straight from Spearhead’s official info:

Trailhead parking: Spearhead lists Laurel Creek trailhead parking at 132 Miners Park Lane, Bluefield, VA 24605, [2])
Permits & helmets: Spearhead requires permits for drivers and riders (including children). Every rider must wear a helmet.
Daylight riding: Trails are open sunrise to sunset (no night riding).

In other words, it’s set up for a solid day of riding without turning your weekend into a rules scavenger hunt.

Why riders love a “new” trail system

A new system isn’t just “something different.” It usually means:

Fresh tread and fresh scenery (no “oh look, the exact same rut from last year” moments)
A chance to be early—before the trail becomes everyone’s default Saturday plan.
Great for groups: newer systems often ride well for a wider range of experience levels (and make it easier to keep your crew together)

And if Laurel Creek is part of your weekend, you can still link it into a bigger Spearhead-focused trip—because you’re right in the heart of where these systems live.

The Real McCoy Cabins advantage: ride hard, recover harder

Let’s be honest: a good ATV weekend isn’t only about the trails. It’s also about what happens after you unload.

Real McCoy Cabins in Pocahontas, VA, is built around that exact idea—easy access, real amenities, and options for different group sizes. Multiple tourism/trail sources describe the property as positioned to serve both Spearhead riding and access into Hatfield-McCoy across the WV line.

1) Stay where you can access multiple systems without constantly trailering

One of the biggest practical perks: Real McCoy Cabins is located in ATV-friendly Pocahontas and is described as providing access to Spearhead’s Original Pocahontas trail and “access to 5 trail systems… without trailering.”

So instead of:
Load → drive → unload → ride → reload → repeat
…you get more:
Coffee → ride → lunch → ride → firepit.

2) Lodging choices for couples, families, and big groups

Real McCoy isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation:

Cabins (including an ADA cabin)
A new (2025) 5-bedroom house for larger groups)
RV slips with full hookups and tent sites

That means your buddy with the toy hauler, your cousin who wants “real bathrooms,” and your friend who swears they “sleep better outside” can all be happy on the same trip.

3) The amenities ATV weekends actually need

This is the unglamorous stuff that makes the whole weekend better:

Two shower houses with climate control and “endless hot water.”
Modern ATV wash on site
Laundromat (because trail dust has a way of moving in permanently)

There’s an on-site country store with trail passes and essentials.

Quick tips to make the trip go smoothly

* Buy permits ahead of time and remember helmets are required.
* Plan for sunrise-to-sunset riding—no night runs.
* Check trail status/closures before you roll in (mountain weather loves plot twists).

Bottom line

Laurel Creek gives you that “new trail energy” in Tazewell County, and Real McCoy Cabins gives you the comfortable, ATV-purpose-built home base that makes the whole trip feel easy—more riding, less fussing, better recovery.

Real McCoy Cabins isn’t just a business—it’s a family adventure. What started as Donald (Don) and Virginia (Ginger) Cates building a small but successful business in Miami turned into something bigger: a dream to create a place where the whole family could work together, live out their values, and share their love of the outdoors.

As lifelong ATV enthusiasts, the Cates family would pack up every year and drive over 1,000 miles—one way!—to ride the Hatfield-McCoy Trails in West Virginia. Those trips sparked an idea: what if we built a business right in the middle of the trails we love most? After exploring trail systems and communities that offered both opportunity and that small-town, family-first feel, they found their perfect spot—Pocahontas, Virginia. And just like that, the wheels were in motion.

Of course, this wasn’t the family’s first rodeo when it came to travel. With years of softball tournaments up and down the East Coast and countless family vacations, they had stayed in every kind of lodging imaginable. Most of them? Let’s just say they left plenty of room for improvement. That gave them a vision: build cabins that feel like rustic luxury, with all the little details that make a stay unforgettable.

Their goal? Simple:

  • Cozy cabins designed with comfort and style.
  • Hospitality that feels like home, from fresh hot breakfasts to boxed trail lunches.
  • The extras that matter, like crockpot dinners waiting when you get back from a long day on the trails.

The Cates family set out to create not just a place to stay, but an experience worth coming back to again and again.

The Journey

  • January 2015: The adventure begins. The property is purchased, construction on the first cabin starts—and of course, one of Virginia’s coldest winters decides to show up. Permits, codes, delays… you name it, they faced it.
  • July 2015: A historic flood tests the property’s new drainage system. Spoiler: it worked like a charm.
  • October 2015: Three cabins are completed, and the first guests arrive—filling all three cabins and RV spots! Their enthusiasm for supporting the local community was contagious. In fact, one guest ended up buying a business in Pocahontas and another purchased a vacation home nearby.
  • November 2015: The Grand Opening of Real McCoy Cabins. The reviews start rolling in—5 stars across the board.
  • 2016: Cabins #4, #5, and #6 open, along with the Real McCoy Country Store and Kitchen. The dream keeps growing.

Today, Real McCoy Cabins is thriving with thousands of happy guests, many of them loyal regulars (some on their 14th stay!). With over 11,000 followers on social media and a wall of glowing reviews, the Cates family is proof that when you mix passion, perseverance, and a little mud on the tires—you can build something truly special.

Two Scenic Trail Options

One of the reasons for hiking to Cascade Falls. Virginia is so memorable is the option to take two different trails that form a loop:

  • Lower Trail – The lower path hugs the creek and provides the closest views of the rushing water, moss-covered rocks, and vibrant wildflowers. Though rockier and more challenging, it’s the most rewarding for those who enjoy being right next to the stream.

  • Upper Trail – The upper path offers smoother footing and a more elevated perspective, giving hikers panoramic views of the forest and valley. Many visitors take the lower trail to the waterfall and return via the upper trail for variety.

Experiencing Cascade Falls

The highlight of the Cascade Falls hike Virginia is, of course, the waterfall itself. Cascading 66 feet into a crystal-clear pool, Cascade Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Virginia. Hikers often rest on the large, flat rocks at the base to enjoy a picnic, capture photos, and breathe in the refreshing mountain air before heading back.
